It is a major time-saver and minimizes number of touch inputs needed to do a specific task -- if the touch design UI is given the love needed, of course. So I can easily online loans this work. This device, even with no third party app support, would have been so cool to use if the 3D touch worked on the system features alone.
The app to just show heat map and pressure points while holding or hovering would have been a good show off to non-windows users, if nothing else. MS cancelled it becuase a certain Mr. I also don't get the argument that the 3D touch was a mobile only feature. With windows 10 it could have rolled onto the PCs as well, though only the ones with touch. But not having those on non-touch devices would not have been a deal breaker.
With right kind of marketing and pricing, it could have helped MS gain a bit of market share, rather than losing it. Then the same 3D touch and other features could have been improved in terms of ahrdware and worked woderfully well with windows 10.
Only thing that was required was a push from top management to the development team that we want it with the users and we want it now. By now, we would have gooten to a fairly stable 3D touch thing, with a lot of supported features and q few third party apps as well.
MS really messed it all up big time back in 2014. It first put all its eggs in windows 10 basket, and has since asked for more incubation time for it to really show its prowess. I hope the surface phone comes with this 3D feature (though there is little to suggest that it would).
I completely agree with Daniel that by cancelling this, and with no plan B in place, MS sealed the fate of windows phone. Microsoft should have pushed that technology.
That ship has sailed much like this one. It look really crappy. The camera module on the back looks like a face with a eye-cover. And the 3D touch, although a nice idea, probably needs app support which when this is the only phone that has this will never happen. Microsoft did the right thing to kill the phones, they would have done righter by not buying Nokia in the first place. You can downvote me if you want, but I am much happier with my 950XL than I would have been with McLaren.
The prototype has some neat bits, but nothing to win me over. Metal phones feel nice (assuming you don't leave it in your car or direct summer sun), but they are heavy, which feels bad in your pocket, and there is no way I would give up wireless charging and NFC just for the feel. I actually like the shape of the 950XL better, with its flat sides and face, plus the much smaller camera hump. It could definitely use some metal edges though. I still think the 3D Touch is a bad idea on a portable device.
It's just too difficult to locate both the phone, and your hand in space in relation to one another without touching. I much prefer holding down (long-press) on the tile to explode out options, and I hate that in the demo it would jump to the middle of the screen, which is quite disorienting.
The edge-touch options are intriguing, such as the possibility of sliding a finger along the button-less side for volume or focus, but ultimately, I suspect that there would be too many unintended presses.
The rotation lock could be done with the FF camera by tracking the eyes, which I think would be much more accurate than even tracking grasp. This thing is like bigfoot these days. Nerd fantasy that won't die.
